牛や豚などの家畜以外の動物、たとえばワニやトカゲ、ヘビなどのは虫類や、オーストリッチなどの鳥類から得られる皮革の総称を、かつてはは虫類皮革と称していました。しかし、正確な表現ではないとのことから、は虫類皮革に代わって、家畜以外の動物全般を指すエキゾチックアニマルを語源として､この呼び名が使われるようになりました。は虫類や両生類、鳥類や魚類などの革が該当します。
